Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

each night I go to bed
a little bit later
I wake up in the morning
forgetting the past

days add up like coins in my pocket
I'm rich with hours
another little bit has passed

I find another hobby
swear to myself I'll get healthy
another little bit has passed

I think about the news
write about my views
another little bit has passed

when will this world come to an end?
it seems so eternal right now

I really liked this. The repetition of the phrase "another little bit has past" and the rhythms of the poem reinforce the coin imagery in the beginning and the more linear hour by hour addition type of eternity (like a number line--eternity by addition--quantitative). The bits, though--the hours--have a hollow feel--despite being filled, it is as if they are the empty spaces between the marks on the number line. This makes the poem feel so sad. It reminds me of the empty type of time Benjamin talks about in his Theses on History. He also talks about a different type of time, though--Jetztzeit--a fullness possible within each moment. It's a qualitative view of time/eternity. I'm still wrapping my head around it, but it's a redemptive type of time and I'm hoping that something like that exists. :-)

Thanks so much. I really enjoyed this.

Thanks for the deep analysis of my poem . . . Which "Benjamin" were you referring to? Just curious . . . But yeah, I'm aware of the two types of time you speak about, I've read that somewhere.

Walter Benjamin. His work is a little hard to classify. Great essays. He was associated with the Frankfurt School for a while, a school in Germany, a group of neo-Marxist intellectuals doing critical and cultural theory, social research, and philosophy.
